Confidence on Camera: How to Show Up as Your Best Self in Your Business Portrait

When was the last time you truly felt confident in front of the camera?
Not just “I took a photo because I needed one”…
But confident—like you looked at your image and thought, “Yes, that’s me. That’s how I want people to see me.”
Because the truth is… your business portrait is more than just a photo. It’s how people connect with you before they even meet you.
Where Beauty Meets Photography
I recently had the opportunity to bring both of my worlds together—my photography and my work with Mary Kay. We hosted a makeover experience as part of a special project, and it turned into something even more meaningful than I expected. Three business owners joined me. They received a facial, a makeover, and then stepped in front of my camera for updated business portraits. And let me tell you… the transformation wasn’t just physical.
A Story That Stayed With Me
One of the women, Ludie, came in because she was about to be featured in a magazine. She used the portrait we created together for that feature—and she’s continued using it across her brand since then.
That right there? That’s the power of showing up confidently.
But what really touched me was that she brought her daughter with her. Her daughter was going through some personal challenges, and during that session, she got to experience self-care, attention, and encouragement. By the time we took her photos… you could see the difference. Her smile said everything.
That’s what I mean when I say this is more than just photos.
Confidence Changes Everything On Camera
Here’s something I’ve seen over and over again:
The way you feel → shows up in your photos.
That’s why beauty and self-care matter.
It’s not about perfection.
It’s about feeling prepared, taken care of, and confident in your own skin.
Sometimes that comes from a little makeup.
Sometimes it’s just taking the time to pause, breathe, and show up for yourself.
What Should You Wear for Your Business Portrait?
I get this question all the time. And my answer is always the same:
It depends on your business—and who you are.
Your brand is YOU.
If you’re bold, creative, and love glam → show up that way
If you’re more classic and professional → keep it clean and simple
If your business is hands-on (florist, artist, stylist) → bring that into your look
I’ve photographed:
A florist wearing her apron with her logo
A travel advisor pulling a suitcase
Real estate agents in both formal and lifestyle looks
There is no “one way” to do it.
Simple Styling Tips That Always Work
If you’re not sure where to start, here are my go-to recommendations:
1. Stick to solid colors
They photograph clean and keep the focus on you.
2. Coordinate with your brand
Think about your logo, your website, your overall vibe.
3. Keep hair off your face
Whether it’s down or styled back, we want to see YOU.
4. Go for natural, polished makeup
A little blush, lip color, and definition goes a long way.
(Unless your brand calls for full glam—then go all in!)
Let’s Talk About Your Smile
I always tell my clients this: A smile changes everything. It makes you feel more approachable, more confident, more YOU. And yes… sometimes it feels awkward at first (totally normal 😅), but once you relax, laugh a little, and get comfortable—that’s when the magic happens.
Those are the photos you end up loving.
You Don’t Need a Fancy Studio
Some of my favorite business portraits have been taken:
At my home studio with a simple white backdrop
Inside a client’s home using natural walls
On location with minimal setup
It’s not about the location.
It’s about the experience and the connection.
And having a photographer who knows how to bring that out of you 😉
Your Business Portrait Is Your First Impression
Most of the time, this photo will live on:
Your website
Your social media
Your marketing materials
So don’t treat it like an afterthought.
Make it intentional.
Make it YOU.
Final Thoughts: Just Be You
At the end of the day…
You don’t need to look like anyone else.
You don’t need to fit into a box.
Your business portrait should feel like you on your best day.
Confident.
Prepared.
And ready to show up.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your business portraits, this might be your sign 🤍
Let’s create something that not only looks good—but feels like you too.
