Studio vs Outdoor Business Portraits: What’s Best for Your Brand?

When was the last time you updated your business portrait?
Seriously—think about it.

Is your current photo something you took on your phone?
Did you crop it from a family picture?
Or have you invested in a professional headshot before?
There’s no right or wrong answer here.
In fact, I’ll be honest—my own profile photo? I took it with my phone.
If you look closely, you can actually see my camera in the photo with me… which means I couldn’t exactly take it with my professional camera 😅 So yes—I used my iPhone. And here’s the thing: it worked because I understood my lighting, my angles, and my settings.
So you can absolutely take your own profile photo with your phone. But there does come a point where a professional portrait becomes more than just “a photo.” It becomes part of your brand.
Why Your Business Portrait Matters More Than You Think
Your headshot is one of the most used images in your business.
You’re using it for:
Your social media profiles
Your website
Your business cards
Networking groups
Features, blogs, or collaborations
It’s not just a picture—it’s how people recognize you. And because of that, this one image carries a lot of weight. That’s why, as a photographer, I always say: You’re not just paying for a photo—you’re investing in something you’re going to use everywhere.
Studio vs Outdoor: So… Which One Should You Choose?
This is the question I get all the time. And honestly? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. I don’t even have a studio myself, so when clients come to me, I always ask: Do you want a studio look, or something outdoors?
Each option gives a completely different feel—and it really comes down to you and your business. Let’s break it down 👇
Studio Business Portraits
Studio portraits are clean, controlled, and timeless.
You’re working with:
Solid or styled backdrops
Controlled lighting
Consistent results
Air conditioning (very important in Arizona 😅)
This is a great option if you want:
A polished, professional look
Something simple and distraction-free
A photo that works across any platform
In Phoenix, I often recommend places like Studio House AZ because they offer multiple rooms and styles—so you still get variety even indoors.
Outdoor Business Portraits
Outdoor portraits feel more natural, relaxed, and lifestyle-driven.
You get:
Natural lighting
Variety in backgrounds
Movement and personality
Locations that reflect your brand
I’ve photographed:
Real estate agents at their offices
A real estate investor at Tempe Town Lake
Florists, travel advisors, and networking groups outdoors
Each one felt different—because their business was different.
Outdoor sessions are great if you want:
A more approachable, personal vibe
Storytelling in your images
A location that represents your work
Plus… no studio rental fee, which can make it more flexible.
The Question You Should Really Be Asking
Instead of asking: “Studio or outdoor?”
Ask yourself: 👉 What do I want my brand to say?
Do you want:
Clean and corporate? → Studio
Lifestyle and personality? → Outdoor
Both are professional.
Both are valid.
It just depends on the message you want to send.

My Honest Take as a Photographer
I’ll tell you this from experience…
There’s no “better” option. I’ve seen amazing studio portraits. I’ve seen amazing outdoor portraits.
What actually matters is:
How confident you feel
How well it represents your business
And how you use it afterward
Because at the end of the day…
👉 A great portrait is one you actually USE.
So… When Was the Last Time You Updated Yours?
If you’re still using the same photo from years ago…
Or you’ve been meaning to update it but keep putting it off…
